To rule out/in IWE you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. If you have 4A, leave it in 4A. 2. If you don't have 4A, pull the electrical plug to the solenoid on the drivers side firewall. Both should keep the IWEs engaged. See if the noise reoccurs. What you describe is the exact symptom of an IWE that is partially engaged when it shouldn't be. (in 2WD, the IWE should not be engaged.
